HYDERABAD: The government of Telangana today, April 4, launched Cool Roof Policy, becoming the first state in India to come out with the initiative aimed at reducing the urban heat island impact and bringing down energy consumption.

KT Rama Rao (KTR), minister of municipal administration and urban development, introduced the policy with the intention of making the state more tolerant of heat waves and comfortable to live in. The policy went into force on April 1 of this year and is already included in requests for building permits.

The Telangana Cool Roof Policy 2023–28 recommends using cool roofs as a measure to deploy in order to strengthen resistance to excessive heat. He stated, "We strive to be an eco-friendly state with less reliance on energy usage for cooling.

Regardless of the site area or built-up area, the cool roof is now required for all government-owned, non-residential, commercial structures. Only after verifying that the policy is being followed will occupancy certificates be granted. For residential constructions with a plot area of 600 square yards or more, cool roof installation is required. It is optional or voluntary for constructions with plot areas of less than 600 square yards, nevertheless.

Minister Rama Rao set a good example by having his home's cool roof painted. He claimed that it has several advantages. He instructed staff to look at providing incentives to encourage developers and property owners to follow the rules for cool roofs.

There will be a unique training session concerning cool roof products and their advantages for contractors and everyone else working in the building business. cool roof paints or tiles will cost Rs 300 per square metre, KTR  claimed. The aim of the policy is to create an ecosystem of vendors, skilled labour, testing, and materials to support the installation of cool roofs.
