Mumbai Indians have named former Sri Lankan pace sensation Lasith Malinga as their bowling coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. This development follows the recent departure of their former coach, Shane Bond, who parted ways with the franchise after a nine-year association.
Lasith Malinga, a veteran pacer who played for the Mumbai Indians for a decade between 2009 and 2019, will now be part of the coaching staff led by Mark Boucher.
In the Mumbai Indians camp, Malinga will work alongside Kieron Pollard, who was also his former teammate with the franchise. Pollard, in addition to being the Mumbai Indians' bowling coach, holds a similar role with two other teams owned by the Mumbai Indians franchise in different leagues. He coaches MI Cape Town in the SA20 League in South Africa and MI New York in Major League Cricket in the United States of America.
"It is truly an honor for me to be appointed as the Bowling Coach of Mumbai Indians, and my journey in the OneFamily continues, following MI New York and MI Cape Town," said Malinga in a statement. "I am looking forward to working closely with Mark, Polly, Rohit, and the rest of the team." Malinga also expressed his eagerness to work with the young talent in the bowling unit, recognizing their potential.
Lasith Malinga boasts a long-standing association with the Mumbai Indians franchise since 2009 and has a remarkable track record of winning seven trophies across various leagues. His accolades include four IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles as a player, while as a bowling coach, he secured one Major League Cricket title. Prior to his role with the Mumbai Indians, Malinga served as the fast bowling coach of the Rajasthan Royals side in the Indian Premier League.
