BOGOTA: More than 21,000 passengers were affected and 136 flights were cancelled in Colombia as a result of an emergency landing of a commercial airliner near Medellin, Civil Aviation Director Jair Orlando Fajardo said in a statement.

The LATAM Airlines Airbus A320-front 200's landing gear failed shortly after takeoff on Tuesday afternoon, forcing the plane to return to the Jose Maria Cordova International Airport in Rionegro for an emergency landing, as per reports. During the emergency landing, no injuries were recorded.

Flights to and from Rionegro were cancelled for more than 12 hours, according to Fajardo, resulting in delays and cancellations at other airports, particularly Bogota's El Dorado International Airport.

"At this time, the airport is open and running normally," he said, adding that the 136 flights that were cancelled and the 21,245 passengers who were impacted by the incident are being addressed. Investigations were underway to discover the cause of the situation, said Fajardo.
