Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib said that, the US would enable Lebanon to buy natural gas and power from Egypt and Jordan via Syria without being constrained by the US Caesar Act, which restricts collaboration with Syria.
Bou Habib stated on Thursday during a meeting with President Michel Aoun at Baabda Palace to update him on his recent trip to the United States that US officials had notified Egyptian officials about Lebanon's capacity to import electricity through Syria. Last September, the Energy and Oil Ministers of Jordan, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon agreed to send power from Jordan and natural gas from Egypt through the Arab Gas pipeline to alleviate Lebanon's electrical problem.
The Lebanese Foreign Minister also stated that US officials have expressed an interest in restarting the process of demarcating the southern maritime border between Lebanon and Israel, and that US mediator Amos Hochstein will return to Lebanon in the coming days to continue his efforts in this regard.
Lebanon has been through an extraordinary financial crisis as a result of successive governments' failed policies, which have resulted in a national debt of over $96 billion.
