In the year 1930, she started her career by meeting her mentor and future husband Uday Shankar for the first time. It is said that Aamla was 11 years old at that time. Amala gave her first performance in Belgium in the year 1931, which people liked very much.

In the year 1939, Amala was performing in Chennai with a dance group. At that time Uday had proposed to her for marriage. In the year 1942, Amala and Uday got married and they have two children. Her son's name is Anand and daughter's name is Mamta. In today's time, both are associated with the field of music and art.
