Shimla: Due to decreasing students figure in government schools of Himachal, many schools have been closed. There are less than 20 students in 6366 government schools from first to 8th grade and less than 60 students in 5322 schools. These figures are increasing the concern of the government. There are currently 10,585 primary schools in the state. Of these, 5302 schools have 20 and 4484 have fewer than 60 students. Of the 1948 middle schools, 1064 have 20 and 838 have fewer than 60 students. According to statistics, there are more than 60 students in only 799 primary and 46 middle schools in the state.

Many schools with less than 20 numbers have been opened to accommodate teachers at present. Enrollment of students in schools adjacent to most district headquarters of the state, including the capital Shimla, has been very low. The number of teachers is more than the proportion of students in these schools. There are more students in schools in remote areas of the state, but there are relatively few teachers here. Teachers with access to those close to power have been living in schools for a long time. If the enrollment of such students in government schools continues to decline, many schools with 20 students may have to be merged with adjacent schools.

In the year 2019-20, the number of primary schools with less than 20 numbers has increased to 152 as compared to the year 2018-19. In 2018-19, 5150 primary schools had less than 20 enrollments. Similarly, 20 middle schools have also increased. There were less than 20 students in 1044 middle schools in 2018-19.

There is not a single government middle school in the state, where there are more than 221 students. There are only 2 schools in the state with the number of 141 to 220 students. There are 9 schools with 101 to 140 pupils and 35 schools with 61 to 100 children. On the other hand, 221 to 300 students are studying in 12 primary schools and more than 300 students in 13 schools. There are 50 with 141 to 220 children, 148 with 101 to 140 children and 612 primary schools with 61 to 100 numbers.

While enrollment in government schools decreased, 8366 students increased in private schools. During the year 2019-20, 5,58,428 students enrolled in 2855 private schools. In the year 2018-19, this number was 5,50,062.
