Srinagar: National Conference leader and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah, expressed strong sentiments about the Supreme Court's verdict on the abrogation of Article 370, saying that Jammu and Kashmir should "go to hell." Speaking to reporters, he criticized the government's actions, stating, "They betrayed people. They want to win people's hearts. How'd you win that if you'd do such things to push people farther away?"

Defending Jawahar Lal Nehru against recent BJP criticisms blaming him for the state's decades of violence and instability, Farooq Abdullah asserted that Nehru was not responsible for providing special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370. He pointed out that during the time when Article 370 was introduced, Nehru was in the United States, and the decision was made in a cabinet meeting where Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Syama Prasad Mukherjee were involved.

"I don't know why they (BJP) have so much venom against Nehru," Abdullah said, emphasizing that Nehru was not the driving force behind Article 370. He hoped that the Supreme Court would direct the Centre to conduct immediate elections in Jammu and Kashmir, expressing disappointment with the given timeline until September. The Supreme Court recently upheld the revocation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, setting a deadline for the Centre to restore statehood and hold elections. Farooq Abdullah criticized the timeline, questioning, "Where's the justice?"

In a separate development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah targeted Jawaharlal Nehru, holding him responsible for Pakistan's illegal occupation of a portion of Kashmir, known as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Shah made these remarks during discussions on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, in the Rajya Sabha. He reiterated in the Lok Sabha that Nehru's mistakes had led to prolonged suffering in Kashmir.
