The Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament, has greenlit a crucial bill aimed at regulating the appointment process for the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners.

During a concise deliberation session on Thursday, the Lok Sabha successfully passed the Bill. This legislative measure seeks to establish a structured mechanism for appointing the CEC and Election Commissioners.

The Rajya Sabha, the upper house, had previously given its consent to the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service, and Term of Office) Bill, 2023.

In response to discussions surrounding the Bill, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal highlighted that the existing 1991 Act pertaining to the service conditions of the CEC and ECs was insufficient. He emphasized that the new Bill fills the gaps left unaddressed by prior legislations, providing a comprehensive framework.

Following the debate, the Bill received unanimous approval through a voice vote, marking a crucial step forward in streamlining the appointment procedures for key electoral officials in the country.
