NEW DELHI; In the midst of new concerns over coronavirus, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today (December 22) advised parliamentarians to wear a mask and spread awareness about Covid-appropriate behaviour.

The speaker came to the House wearing a mask himself and mentioned Covid cases are once again on the rise in some countries. He said the government has taken steps on war footing basis and asked people to wear masks in crowded place and follow Covid-related protocols, quoting that ''We should be vigilant keeping in mind the past trends of the covid  pandemic.

The Speaker so said masks have been made available for MPs at the gates and they should all wear one. coronavirus is back at the centre of India's health and political map with the government on Wednesday advising people to get vaccinated and mask up, and advising that  random sample testing will be conducted at airports for passengers arriving from China and other countries.

In the meantime, in Rajya Sabha, The Maritime Anti-Piracy Bill, 2022, was passed after a comprehensive discussion and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s reply. The Lok Sabha also nominated ten members to the joint committee of Parliament to examine the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2022.

The Upper House Tuesday referred the Bill to the committee. Cooperation Minister Amit Shah had said 21 members of the joint panel will be from the Lok Sabha and ten from the Rajya Sabha. The bill also seeks to reform the electoral process, strengthen governance, improve the monitoring mechanism, and make certain ease of doing business in multi-state co-operative societies.
