New Delhi: The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha have rejected the opposition's demand for a virtual meeting of the Parliamentary Committee during the cryout if coronavirus. Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge had written to The Upper House Chairman and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu demanding a virtual meeting of the Parliamentary Committee. Their demand has been turned down.

In fact, there was a demand from several opposition parties, including the Congress, to hold a parliamentary committee meeting virtually. He said that physical meeting is not possible due to the second wave of corona, so virtual meetings should be allowed. On this, the Chairman of the Upper House and the Speaker of the Lok Sabha said that the issue was raised even during the first wave but the rules do not allow it.

A letter issued by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat states that the parliamentary committee meetings are secret and the present provisions do not provide for a virtual meeting of the parliamentary committee. Virtual meetings must amend the rules and require parliament's approval to change the rules. There cannot be a virtual meeting before that. Not only the Congress but other opposition parties also demanded that the parliamentary committee meeting be virtually held.
