Alba Ahmetaj, 44, and Edlira Mara, 43, may seem like an ordinary couple in Tirana, Albania. They cherish their twin daughters, play with them on weekends, and share matching shoulder tattoos that symbolize their 14-year relationship. Yet, their recent rooftop wedding atop the mayor's office in central Tirana marked a historic moment, defying Albania's stance on same-sex unions.

Albanian law currently does not recognize same-sex civil unions, a fact that has drawn criticism from the political right and religious communities. Despite these challenges, on Sunday, May 19, friends and supporters gathered as Alba and Edlira exchanged rings and vows, sealing their commitment with a kiss.

"This ceremony is a testament to our love and a call for equality," Edlira expressed, reflecting on the significance of their union. "Society may not be ready, but our love cannot be denied."

The event was not without controversy. Social media erupted with thousands of threatening comments when news of the wedding spread. Police guarded the ceremony to ensure the couple's safety, and opposition parties even used the occasion to criticize the mayor, accusing Alba and Edlira of undermining family values.
