Film actress and writer Shaukat Kaifi Azmi died on Friday. Shaukat was the wife of a famous poet, writer and lyricist Kaifi Azmi and mother of famous actress Shabana Azmi and famous cameraman Baba Azmi. She was ill for a long time. According to her family sources, due to the same illness, on Friday evening, she died at her residence in Juhu. Her daughter Shabana Azmi was also present at the time she died.

Shaukat was associated with the Progressive Writers Association, the cultural wing of the Indian People's Theater Association (IPTA) and the Communist Party of India (CPI). In the film world, she is best remembered for her performances in art films like MS Sathyu's 'Garam Hawa' and Muzaffar Ali's 'Umrao Jaan' and Sagar Sarhadi's 'Bazaar'. The stories of Shaukat and Kaifi Azmi's marriage are also interesting, in which it is said that in a Mushaira in Hyderabad after listening to Kaifi's famous Nazm 'Aurat',  Shaukat broke her engagement and offered Nikah in front of him. Century celebrations are being organized this year in memory of Kaifi Azmi.

When Kaifi Azmi used to come in Mushaira, people used to praise him a lot. He was a member of the Progressive Writers Association and was vocal about his society. After becoming a member of the Communist Party, he used to live in his own community. Shabana and Baba were also born there. Shaukat supported him in every situation. Kaifi also considered his wife to be an inspiration, 'Aurat' is one of those Nazm.
