Indore: An engineer of a municipality in the Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh has been arrested red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000. The accused engineer has been identified as Sagir Ahmad. A class IV employee of the office has also been arrested along with him. The arrest was made by the Lokayukta team on Friday (April 29, 2022). According to media reports, when the complainant went to the accused engineer with the bribe money, Sagir Ahmed asked him to wait. Sagir said that he is going to pray, from where he will return after an hour.
As soon as he returned from prayers, he took the bribe and at the same time, the team of Lokayukta, already prepared, arrested him. The complainant's name is Sarthak Somani. It was Sarthak Somani who did the awareness wall painting for the Swachhta Survekshan 2022 in Burhanpur town. Sarthak completed the work on February 28, 2022. Its total bill was around Rs 21 lakh, which Sagir was demanding a bribe to pass. Due to the non-receipt of the bribe, he had kept the bill payment pending for 2 months. Finally, the deal between Somani and Sagir was fixed for 1.5 lakh rupees. Sarthak Somani said, "To get my money, I rubbed a lot of slippers and folded hands and legs. My file account had gone to the department for payment, but Sagir Ahmed picked up the file from there as well. I had given them a lot of money before, yet they were demanding one and a half lakh more.''
Meanwhile, Sarthak Somani lodged a complaint with the Indore Lokayukta against Sagir Ahmed. After this, a team was formed to arrest the engineer. Sagir had called Somani to the municipal office to collect the bribe. According to the scheme, Sagir was given Rs 50,000 in cash and the remaining money by paying a cheque of Rs 1 lakh. The bribe money was taken by peon Ajay More and engineer Sagir was present with him. The Lokayukta team has booked both engineer Sagir and peon under the Anti Corruption Act and 120-B (conspiracy) and arrested them.
