BHUBANESWAR: A member of the outlawed CPI Maoist with a bounty of 5 lakh surrendered before the Odisha police and laid down his arms here on Sunday, an official said.

Lalu @ Sandhu @ Laxman Apka (50), a surrendered Maoist from Chattisgarh's Bijapur district, is being held at the Bangalore police station. At the age of 17, he joined the banned outfit in Bangalore Dalam in 2009 and moved to Odisha in 2011.

He has been working in the BGN (Bansadhara-Ghumsur-Nagabali) division of the Kalahandi district since then, and is presently the Area committee secretary. DIG Rajesh Pandit, SP Kalahandi Savarna Vivek, and CRPF Commandant Biplab Sarkar were there when he surrendered.

According to the SP, Lalsu became disillusioned with unlawful Maoist activities over time. The marriage of surrendered Maoist cadre pair Ramdas and Kalamdei, which was conducted by Kalahandi police on April 22 at the Bhawanipatna reserve police barrack site, was the immediate motivating cause. According to the DIG, the surrendered Maoist was involved in gunfights with police in Manaska in 2016, Barangapadar in 2017, Turkey, Kotalghati in 2019, and Sohespadar in 2020.

The DIG  said the caught Maoist  is being interrogated further to determine his involvement in other crimes.
