Dhritarashtra contemplates the marriage of his son Duryodhana and tells Gandhari that if Duryodhana wins the Panchal king Draupadi's swayamvar, then the Panchal king will befriend Hastinapur. The five Pandavas and Kunti, who spend their lives in the forest, invite for food to some Brahmins. They learns that in the city of Kampilya, King Drupada has kept his daughter Draupadi's swayamvar and while eating, they narrates the story of Draupadi to the five Pandavas.

The Brahmin narrates the birth story of Draupadi, saying that Acharya Drona and King Drupada were childhood friends. Encouraged by the same spirit of friendship, King Drupada gave half his kingdom to Drona, which Acharya Drona started believing. When Drupada became king, Drona reached there, which Drupada did not like and he insulted Drona. After this, Dronacharya got the job of training the princes of Hastinapur and Drona asked his teachers for the Panchal kingdom as Gurudakshina. Acharya Drona handed over half of the Panchal kingdom he won from Drupada to Drupada, with the feeling of friendship.

After which Drupada's heart started burning in the fire of vengeance and he went out in search of a sage who would give him a son in boon, who could slay Drona. The sage Upayaj refused to give him this boon and asked to go to his eldest brother Yaz. Drupada comes to the sage Yaj and asks to perform a yagya to get a son. The sage starts the yajna and through the fire of the yajna, Drupada gets a son Dhritadadyumna and a daughter Draupadi.
