Roopa Ganguly is one of the most loved actresses of her time. She became famous for her role in Mahabharata. Roopa has worked in Hindi and Bengali TV shows. She became an overnight star by playing the role of Draupadi in the TV show Mahabharata. She remained in the headlines for her personal life more than her professional life.  Her personal life was very tragic. There were many ups and downs in her married life.

Roopa Ganguly once confessed in a reality show that she quit acting after marriage and shifted to Kolkata with her husband.   She was not in a happy relationship with her husband also tried to commit suicide three times to get rid of daily quarrels. Roopa Ganguly had told in an interview that her husband used to feel insecure about her actress status.  The couple has a son named Akash. Akash was born in 1997. Akash was taken into custody by the police in 2019 on charges of rash driving.

The role of Draupadi was first offered to Juhi Chawla before Rupa Ganguly but Juhi was busy shooting for her debut film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Apart from Juhi Chawla, Ramya Krishnan was also offered a role but role later went to Roopa. Roopa once revealed that she cried after the most famous Draupadi Cheer Harna scene in Mahabharata. She even did not talk to Dushashan in real life.

On the career front, Roopa Ganguly is also a trained Rabindra Sangeet vocalist and a classical dancer. Before accepting the role of Draupadi in Mahabharat, she was featured in Bengali TV serial 'Streer Patra' in 1985 and Hindi TV serial Ganadevta in 1986. In 2011, Ganguly got a national film award for best female playback singer for the film "Abosheshey."
