Mumbai: On January 24th, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) took significant action by filing a case against a 32-year-old engineer from Nashik for transferring funds to the proscribed terrorist organization ISIS. The accused, engaged in an export-import business in Nashik, was promptly arrested, and a court hearing resulted in his custody being extended until January 31st to facilitate further investigation.

During search operations at the engineer's residence, authorities seized electronic devices, including mobile phones, SIM cards, laptops, and pen drives, alongside incriminating documents. The ATS has charged the arrested individual under sections 39(1)(a) and 40(1)(b)(c) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967. The investigation revealed that the accused had transferred funds to ISIS on three separate occasions.

The ATS initiated the probe based on intelligence inputs regarding the suspect's links to terror groups. Surveillance revealed ongoing communication between the individual and ISIS, coupled with radical posts on social media. While the ATS has not disclosed the identity of the accused, it stated that he "maintained continuous communication with a foreign entity associated with ISIS, a proscribed organization banned by the Government of India."

In an official statement, the ATS clarified, "The investigation discloses that the accused, who has exhibited signs of radicalisation in recent years, actively supported ISIS by transferring funds to the mentioned foreign entity." Following the court order, the accused remains in police custody until January 31st.

As part of the intensified investigation, the ATS is scrutinizing associates of the accused across multiple states. The competent court has directed a thorough examination of the case, emphasizing the urgency of addressing potential links and implications related to terrorism funding.
