Maharashtra CID arrested two policemen in Param Bir Singh recovery case

Mumbai: Maharashtra CID arrested two policemen on Monday in connection with the Param Bir Singh recovery case. Maharashtra CID has arrested police inspector Nandkumar Gopal and inspector Asha Korke in the case. Nandkumar Gopal and Asha Korke were summoned for questioning by the state CID on Monday. The duo was arrested late in the evening after hours of interrogation. CID will produce Gopal and Asha Korke in the fort court at 11 am on Tuesday.

An official said that both the arrested police officers were earlier posted in the Mumbai crime branch and a case of extortion was registered against them and former city police commissioner Param Bir Singh at Marine Drive police station. Police Inspector Nandkumar Gopal is presently posted at Khandala Police Training Centre and Asha Korke Naigaon is posted in the local arms unit. The duo has been arrested over a complaint lodged by real estate developer Shyamsundar Agarwal at Marine Drive police station on July 22 on charges of extortion alleging extortion of Rs 15 crore.

Seven others, including Param Bir Singh, including five police officers, have been named in the FIR. Police had arrested Agarwal's former business partner Sanjay Punamiya and his associate Sunil Jain during the investigation. Five policemen named in the FIR have been identified as DCP (Crime Branch) Akbar Pathan, Assistant Commissioner of Police Srikant Shinde, ACP Sanjay Patil, Inspector Asha Korke and Crime Branch Inspector Nandkumar Gopal.
