Mumbai: A Thane magistrate court in Maharashtra has issued a summons to Congress leader Digvijay Singh in response to allegations of defamatory remarks made against Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Sadashivrao Golwalkar. The court has directed Singh to appear before it on November 20, following a petition filed by RSS worker Vivek Champanerkar.
The controversy stems from a poster shared by Singh on social media platform X on July 8. The poster quoted Golwalkar as saying that he would prefer to live under British rule than grant equal rights to Dalits, backward classes, and Muslims. In response to the poster, Singh captioned it with, "Do you know what Guru Golwalkar ji's thoughts were for the Dalits, backward classes, Muslims, and on the right to national water, forest, and land?"
Champanerkar had previously sent Singh a notice through his lawyers, Aditya Mishra and Surabhi Pandey, demanding an unconditional apology for his remarks within a two-week period. However, as Singh failed to respond to the notice, Champanerkar pursued legal action by approaching the Thane magistrate court. Furthermore, an FIR has already been lodged against the Congress leader at Indore's Tukoganj Police Station. Singh faces charges under sections 153A, 469, 500, and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), according to an official statement. The legal proceedings are expected to shed light on the contentious remarks and their implications for both parties involved in the case.
