The Maharashtra government on Monday has imposed a night curfew in the state's municipal corporation areas from December 22 to January 5 as a precautionary measure due to the mounting fears about a new coronavirus variant spreading in Britain.
A statement from the Chief Minister office states that, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting in the light of the situation in the UK. During the meeting it was decided that a night curfew will be imposed in municipal corporation areas between 11 pm and 6 am from December 22 to January 5 as a precautionary measure. The statement further added that it has also been decided to make institutional quarantine mandatory for 14 days for those who arrive in the state from European and West Asian countries. Passengers coming to Maharashtra, the state worst-hit by Covid-19, from other countries will be home quarantined, statement added.
The new variant of Covid 19 which spreads more than the existing was first reported in UK after the country started its vaccination. In this one week, almost 60% of new cases are of mutant type. The same variant is been reported in Belgium, Italy, Australia. Following a warning from UK PM and WHO European countries, Middle East countries and India cancelled its flight to and from England and imposed a travel band to stop spreading the virus.
