Pune: At least 17 people have been reported dead in various incidents of flooding and wall collapses following heavy rains in various areas of Pune district of Maharashtra. The district administration has declared a holiday in the city's schools as well as Haveli, Bhor, Purandar and Baramati tehsils on Friday. District officials said around 2,500 people were evacuated to safe places in Baramati tehsil after water was released from the Nazare Dam on the Karaha River near Jejuri.

Police said about 3,000 people were evacuated to safer places due to flooding in the low-lying areas of Pune city and district. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the deaths. He informed that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in the city and Baramati tehsil and all necessary help is being provided in the affected area. In view of waterlogging, holidays have been announced in many tehsils of Pune in school and college.

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil has told that five people sleeping at the dargah in Khed-Shivpur village were washed away in heavy rain. At Purandar, two people have been reported missing. Chief fire officer Prashant Ranpese has said that five people, including a nine-year-old boy, died in the Arneshwar area on Wednesday night.
