Mumbai: Schools in Maharashtra state have been closed due to the scorching heat. The state government has closed the schools of all the boards and declared a holiday. The Maharashtra government today announced its decision to close all state board schools in the state for all classes starting Friday, April 21. Preponing the summer vacations, the government order states that all schools will remain closed from April 21 to June 14.

The same order applies to all the districts except Vidarbha. In Vidarbha, schools will remain closed until June 30, 2023. The order to close the schools came after several people lost their lives due to extreme heat conditions in the state. However, this order is limited only to schools affiliated with the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE). Schools affiliated with CBSE and other boards can continue in the state.

The Maharashtra government has not asked other board schools to close, but it is likely that both the CBSE and ICSE boards in the state may decide to follow suit. Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted heatwave conditions to prevail in entire vulnerable areas with dry weather. In many parts of the state, the temperature is already above 45 degrees.
