Mahashivratri also refers to the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance called Tandava. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar but most festival dates are specified using the lunar portion of the calendar. We all are excited for Mahashivratri. This year Mahashivaratri will fell on 18 February 2023.  It is one of the biggest and most important festivals of  Hinduism. Shiva is considered the Adi Guru or the first Guru, and it was from him that the yogic tradition began. According to the beliefs of Sanatan Dharma, on this day Mahadev, the God of Gods, married Mata Parvati. Here are some interesting facts about the Grand festival of Mahashivaratri.

* On the auspicious occasion of Mahashivaratri,  people worship Mahadev and Mata Parvati with true heart and devotion. It is said that worshiping the pair enables a person to have a good partner.

* On this day, after getting up early in the morning, take a bath and milk in a copper or brass pot, offer it to the Shivling in order to fulfill all the wishes.

* Apart from milk, Belpatra, Dhatura, Madar flowers, Ber etc. are also offered to Shivling on the auspicious occassion.

* It is said that if unmarried girls keep fast on the day of Mahashivaratri and offer water or milk to the Shivling, then they  will get the desired groom.

* On the basis of some stories, it is said that on the day of Mahashivratri, the Moon is near the Sun, therefore,  during this time, the Moon is in the form of life meets Shiva sitting in the form of the Sun, therefore worshiping Lord Shiva on this day gives desired results and attainment.

* Satya hi Shiva hai Shiva hi Sundar hai and therefore Lord Ashutosh is known as Satyam Shivam Sundar. The glory of Mahadev is limitless. Worshiping him on the day of Mahashivaratri helps in getting rid of the problems in married life and increases mutual love.

* There is a belief regarding the fast of Mahashivaratri that by keeping a fast, a person attains salvation.
