Renowned film director Mahesh Bhatt has helmed some exceptional films in Bollywood, including Arth, Saaransh, Naam, Kabzaa, Sadak, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi, Aashiqui, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, and Tamanna. However, he abandoned the direction of a blockbuster film mid-way due to the lead actor's demands. The film in question was the 1998 hit "Gulami," starring Aamir Khan.
In an interview with Indian Express, Mahesh Bhatt revealed that he was initially directing Gulami but had to leave the project due to Aamir Khan's expectations. Bhatt stated that Aamir asked him if he could dedicate his life to the film, which led Bhatt to decide that his brother Vikram was better suited to devote his energy to the project. Mahesh said, "I decided to move away from it. I told Aamir, I didn't think films meant that much to me that I would dedicate my entire life to it. That would be a lie if I said that."
Aamir Khan's demand surprised Mahesh Bhatt, who then handed over the direction of the film to his brother Vikram. Despite his departure from the project, Mahesh praised Vikram's work on the film, stating that it was better than what he could have done. The film was released on June 19, 1998, and became a box office success.
Mahesh Bhatt has recently produced the horror film "Bloody Ishq" with Vikram Bhatt, starring Avika Gor and Varun Puri, which was released on Disney+ Hotstar on July 26. It's noteworthy that Mahesh Bhatt's decision to leave the direction of "Gulami" was due to Aamir Khan's intense dedication to his craft, which sometimes leads to high expectations from his collaborators. Despite this, the film went on to become a success under Vikram Bhatt's direction.
