New Delhi: Indian Navy employees will now be able to move to the Merchant Navy. For this, an agreement has been signed between the Indian Navy and the Directorate General of Shipping. Under the MoU held on June 20, 2022, serving and retired employees of the Navy will be able to serve in the Merchant Navy. The Directorate General of Shipping will undertake the certification of Indian Naval personnel, in accordance with the international STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Monitoring for Sailors) tradition.

The agreement will enable better utilization of skilled and trained employees of the Government of India on the maritime sector, including the blue economy. To give effect to this change, DG Shipping has been issued vide DGS Order 17 of 2022. The order duly acknowledges the advanced training imparted by the Naval Maritime Service and Indian Navy (IN) personnel, including close to all officers and cadres of sailors of the Indian Navy in both the maritime as well as technical sector.

The scheme will require naval personnel to undergo necessary bridging courses and exams. After this and in some cases the minimum merchant ship mandated under the STCW provisions will get a certificate on completion of maritime service. It will assist in seamless transfer of Indian Navy personnel to various designations on merchant ships in Shipping Companies in India as well as across the world.
