Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took aim at the BJP's ambitious target of securing over 400 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, challenging the party instead to first achieve a more modest goal of winning at least 200 constituencies.
Asserting her firm opposition to the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state, Banerjee cautioned citizens against applying for it, warning that doing so could jeopardize their citizenship status. "The BJP's "400 paar" slogan is baseless. Let them first aim for 200 seats, as they fell short even in the recent assembly polls," she remarked, referring to the BJP's lower-than-expected performance in the 2021 state elections.
Addressing her first rally since sustaining an injury earlier in the month, Banerjee reiterated her stance against the CAA and assured that neither it nor the National Register of Citizens (NRC) would be implemented in West Bengal.
Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo, criticized the CPI(M) and Congress, accusing them of aligning with the BJP in the state. "There is no INDIA alliance in West Bengal. The CPI(M) and Congress are collaborating with the BJP," she asserted during her speech at a rally in Krishnanagar in support of TMC candidate Mahua Moitra.
Highlighting the challenges faced by TMC MP Mahua Moitra, Banerjee condemned her expulsion from the Lok Sabha for her vocal opposition to the BJP, underscoring the party's commitment to standing against what it perceives as threats to democracy.
