Kolkata: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has reacted sharply to the exclusion of about 19 lakh people from the National Registration of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. Mamata said that "I was not aware of the failure of NRC earlier. We are surprised to see that more than one lakh Gurkha people have been excluded from this list.

West Bengal CM said that the names of thousands of real Indians, including CRPF and other soldiers, have been kept out of the final list of NRC. Mamata Banerjee has said that those of ex-President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed's family is also excluded from the list of NRC. Mamata said that the government should keep in mind that those who are truly Indians should not be left out of the list.
Mamata Banerjee said that justice should be done to all our genuine Indian brothers and sisters. After the release of the final list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, the demand for it has started in other states as well. In Punjab, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vineet Joshi has demanded the implementation of NRC in the state.
