Kolkata: On Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee said that she will attend the Narendra Modi’s oath-taking ceremony as prime minister on May 30. Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat that the invitation for the ceremony arrived on Tuesday and she will be attending it as "constitutional courtesy".

"I have spoken to a couple of other chief ministers and decided to attend it," she said.

"There are certain ceremonial programs under the Constitution. We try to attend such programs when getting an invitation for swearing-in programs of the president and the prime minister," she further added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) locked horns with TMC in West Bengal and after poll-related violence in every phase of voting, managed to win a record 18 seats in the state Putting political rivalry and differences aside, PM Modi has extended an invitation to Mamata to attend the oath-taking ceremony which will see several national and international dignitaries in attendance.

The development comes after two MLAs from West Bengal, including Trinamool Congress-turned-BJP leader Mukul Roy's son Subhrangshu Roy, along with more than 40 councilors joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Apart from Vijayvargiya, Mukul Roy also welcomed the West Bengal leaders amid cries of "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and "Jai Shri Ram".
