CHAMARAJANAGAR: Karnataka police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against a man for cleaning water tank after a Dalit woman drank water from it, police mentioned on Monday.
Mahadevappa, a native of Heggothara village, was arrested following the incident in Chamarajanagar district. A Dalit from the same village named Giriyappa filed a complaint, which prompted the police operation.
The Dalit woman had come to the village on November 19 to take part in a wedding ceremony. She sipped water from the community's water tank.
The accused had attempted to stop her as she was sipping water by saying it was the Brahmins' path. Later, he and other locals cleaned the tank by pouring cow urine into it.
The village's Dalits complained to Tehsildar Basavaraju about this issue. The officials got to the scene right after and told the villagers not to practise untouchability or discrimination while also allowing all Dalits to sip water from the same water tank.
With the leaders of all communities, the government had also called peace sessions. Minister V. Somanna, the district's in-charge minister, had requested a report on the incident.
