KANPUR: A 50-year-old Muslim man was detained in Kanpur on suspicion of using social media to deceive a Hindu female into entering a relationship.

The accused named Shahenshah Alam is a resident of Kathara area.

He first connected with the girl, who is from the Motihari area of Bihar, a few months ago over Facebook, and made promises to marry her and secure employment for her in Kanpur, police said.

The girl said in her lawsuit that the accused "lured" her into a relationship by hiding his religious affiliation.

The girl arrived at a hotel in Kanpur's Copperganj area on Saturday after receiving an invitation from Alam.

When the girl switched on the lights in the room, she was shocked to see a fifty-year-old man standing in front of her instead of the person whose picture she had seen on his social media account.

The girl mentioned that the accused had given his name as Sachin Sharma.

She sounded an alarm, and the hotel employees then called the police. Later, employees from the Bajrang Dal arrived and raised a commotion.

According to ACP T.B. Singh, it was found throughout the course of the inquiry that the middle-aged man who was arrested goes by the name Shahenshah Alam and works as a bike mechanic.

The matter is under investigation, Police officials mentioned.
