Man defrauded of Rs 40 lakh under the guise of marriage

VIJAYAPURA: False woman IAS officer defrauds man of Rs. 40 lakh under the guise of marriage. Police said, "a man was allegedly duped of more than Rs 40 lakh by a woman on the pretext of marriage in Vijayapura district of Karnataka".

By pretending to be an IAS officer, the accused lured the man and forced him to transfer Rs 41,26,800 over the course of several transactions.

Parameshwar Hipparagi, the victim, is a native of Bangalore and has reported the incident to the cyber police.

Police said that the accused came in contact with Hipparagi, a private company employee, on social media, Facebook. The woman posing as K R  Manjula from Hassan had sent a friend request on Facebook and after he accepted the request, she began chatting with him from June 29.

Manjula said that her mother was ill when she requested a transfer of Rs 700. She continued thereafter to demand money from him for her mother's hospitalisation and funeral.

Later, Manjula maintained that she had cracked UPSC exams and was now an IAS official. He was also informed by Manjula that she had been offered the post of District Commissioner and would be going to Bangalore to accept it.
She began requesting transfers of thousands of dollars, then lakhs, with the assurance that she would return the money all at once.

Parameshwar realised he was being duped after sending Rs 41,26,800 to her account and filed a report with the cyber police. A special team has been formulated to catch the accused. Further investigation is on.
