Coimbatore: The district mahila court has sentenced a 40-year-old man to double life term for murdering his two daughters . A police officer said, Padmanaban was an alcoholic and used to fight with his wife Selvarani and mother Prema for money to buy liquor, the officer said.

“Padmanaban had to shell out a lot of money to treat his wife, who was down with severe blood pressure and partial paralysis, in 2018 and borrow loans from many people. He was not in a financial situation to repay the borrowed cash,” the officer said.

On December 6, 2018, the officer said, Padmanaban came home around 5pm in an inebriated state and picked up a fight with his wife for not providing an amount from her savings. “She replied that the savings were meant for their daughters’ education and that can’t be spent. In a fit of rage, Padmanaban slapped his wife. When his daughters Hemavarshini, 15, and Srija, 8, intervened and requested him not to fight, he assaulted them and his mother as well. He then left the house, but only to return at 9pm.”

According to the officer, Padmanaban fought with his wife again and she contacted the city police control room seeking help. “Police visited the house, but Padmanaban agreed to allow only his daughters inside the house. Around 1am the next day (Dec 7), he strangled his two daughters to death using a dupatta and escaped after threatening his wife and mother.”

Based on Selvarani’s complaint, the Singanallur police registered a case and arrested Padmanaban. The trial was held before the district mahila court, which pronounced the verdict on Friday.
