NEW DELHI: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Thursday that integrating our own indigenous medical systems such as Ayurveda and Yoga with modern medical procedures is the need of the hour. "There should be a stronger emphasis on research and innovation," he said at the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) 62nd Foundation Day ceremony in New Delhi.

Mandaviya congratulated the National Academy of Medical Sciences and expressed his gratitude for the participation of over 20 prestigious universities from throughout the country in the occasion. He praised the school for its contribution to the country's welfare, emphasising that "There was never a scarcity of personnel or brainpower in this country. We merely need to be self-assured ". Mandaviya also urged the audience to have the confidence to pursue their own indigenous research.

The Minister, speaking on the advancements in India's healthcare facilities that were recently experienced during the Covid pandemic, remarked that "We not only designed, but also manufactured and exported the Covid-19 vaccine in a very short period of time. There were some pessimistic predictions about India's Covid management plan, yet we not only managed the pandemic efficiently, but we also shared our best practices with the rest of the world." Mandaviya urged the Academy and researchers to work in research and innovation with the private sector.

He also encouraged any suggestions from the crowd on how to improve India's health care system. He also gave a reading from the book "Journey of NAMS" and congratulated the Presidents of Academics and Associations present in the gathering.  Among those present were Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog, Dr. S. K. Sarin, President, NAMS, Dr. R Dayal, Vice President, NAMS, and Dr. S.C. Gopal, ex-president, NAMS.
