Imphal: In the wake of prolonged ethnic strife and violence that has plagued Manipur for the past three months, the state Cabinet has put forth a recommendation to Governor Anusuiya Uikey, urging her to summon a session of the Assembly on August 21.
The Northeastern state has been grappling with escalating violence, resulting in the loss of more than 100 lives and displacing thousands of people.
The tension between the Metei and Kuki communities escalated on May 3, shortly after the Manipur High Court advised the state government to consider granting Scheduled Tribe status to the former, who represent the majority community in the state.
A notification issued on Friday stated, "The state cabinet has recommended to the Governor to convene the 4th session of the 12th Manipur legislative assembly on 21st August 2023."
The deteriorating situation in Manipur has reverberated in both Houses of Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon Session, with the Opposition members demanding a discussion and a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding a viral video allegedly showing the humiliating treatment of two Northeastern women.
Sticking to their demands, the Opposition members urged the suspension of all scheduled business in both Houses to address the Manipur crisis, leading to disruptions and repeated adjournments.
In response to the crisis, a delegation from the Opposition alliance — I.N.D.I.A — recently visited Manipur for two days. During their visit, they met with displaced locals at relief camps and sought an audience with Governor Uikey. The delegation shared their experiences and submitted a memorandum on Manipur.
Subsequently, another Opposition delegation, led by Congress national president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, met with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, urging her intervention in restoring peace in Manipur.
