Manipur Lifts Internet Suspension in Five Valley Districts After Reviewing Law and Order

The Manipur government has lifted the suspension on internet services in five valley districts, effective immediately. The decision comes after a review of the prevailing law and order situation, said Commissioner (Home) N Ashok Kumar. The suspension, initially imposed on September 10, was a preventive measure taken in the public interest due to ongoing unrest.

Previously, on September 13, the state had conditionally restored broadband services. The Home Department issued an order stating, "The state government has decided to lift any form of internet suspension in the state of Manipur, which was imposed in good faith as a preventive measure in the public interest."

Internet services were cut off in the districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching following protests by students demanding the removal of the Director General of Police (DGP) and the security advisor. The protests, triggered by dissatisfaction over the handling of militant attacks, escalated into violent clashes with security forces, resulting in over 80 injuries, including students and police personnel.

The government has urged internet users to act responsibly and avoid any activities that could lead to a future suspension of services.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister N Biren Singh took to social media to announce the lifting of the internet ban, calling on citizens to use the internet responsibly and to avoid sharing inflammatory content that could disturb peace and harmony in the state.
