New Delhi: With Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal still in jail, his close confidante and former deputy, Manish Sisodia, has stepped up to lead the party's campaign for the upcoming assembly elections in Delhi and Haryana.
Sisodia, who was recently granted bail by the Supreme Court in connection with corruption and money laundering charges related to the Delhi liquor policy case, has taken a prominent role in reviving the party's momentum. He was released from Tihar Jail on Friday after spending 17 months behind bars. His release is expected to provide a significant boost to the AAP, which has been grappling with the political fallout from Kejriwal’s incarceration.
A meeting of senior AAP leaders is scheduled for 6 pm today at Sisodia's residence. This gathering aims to strategize for the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana, where AAP plans to contest all 90 seats, and the Delhi elections, which are anticipated to be held in early 2025.
Manish Sisodia, who has been a central figure in the rise of the AAP since its formation post the 2011 anti-corruption movement, is credited with major contributions to Delhi’s governance. His efforts are particularly noted for transforming the education system in Delhi government schools.
Previously, Sisodia managed 18 significant portfolios, including education, finance, planning, land and building, vigilance, women and child development, and arts and culture. However, he resigned from his cabinet positions on February 28, 2023, following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over alleged discrepancies in the now-abandoned Delhi liquor policy 2021-22. Sisodia has been a successful candidate in three Delhi assembly elections, consistently securing the Patparganj constituency in East Delhi.
