Tungabhadra Reservoir Crisis: Broken Gate Causes Massive Water Release

Bangalore: The Tungabhadra reservoir, a crucial water source for the region, is in crisis after the chain link of its 19th crust gate broke, leading to an uncontrolled release of water. Authorities have restricted public access to the reservoir as they work to manage the situation, which has resulted in a significant outflow into the Tungabhadra River.

The dam at Hospet, which had recently reached full capacity for the first time in two years, had become a popular spot for locals to visit and enjoy the views. However, this incident has prompted the establishment of a strict police cordon, allowing entry only to high-ranking officials and dignitaries. Officials estimate that around 60 to 65 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water must be drained from the reservoir to facilitate repairs to the damaged chain link at gate number 19. The high velocity of the water currently being released complicates repair efforts, making it unsafe for teams to access the damaged area.

Shivraj Thangadagi, the district in-charge minister, visited the site on Sunday morning and confirmed the seriousness of the situation. He stated, "The 19th crust gate chain link is broken, so the water has to be released inevitably. We have discussed this with the authorities. Currently, more than 60 to 65 TMC of water must be emptied. Only after removing at least 20 feet of water will we fully understand the problem."

The dam’s design has been reviewed, and officials have found that due to high water pressure and velocity, it is currently impossible to descend to the gate for repairs. The dam is releasing approximately 1 lakh cusecs of water, and there are concerns that if the outflow exceeds 2.50 lakh cusecs, the situation could worsen, potentially impacting downstream communities. The Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister have been informed, and a team of experts from Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai is expected to arrive soon to address the issue.

The situation remains critical, with a substantial volume of water flowing into the Tungabhadra River due to the malfunction. Officials have reported that the broken part of the chain link has been carried away by the force of the water, complicating efforts to assess the damage fully. The chain link broke around 11 pm on Saturday, August 10. Since then, gate number 19 alone has been releasing between 35,000 and 45,000 cusecs of water. The flow could increase significantly as the full extent of the damage becomes clearer.

Authorities have issued warnings to residents living along the river to exercise extreme caution due to the risk posed by the rising water levels. The local administration, in coordination with state officials, is working to mitigate the impact and ensure public safety. In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has also taken note of the incident. He has instructed officials to visit the dam and assess the situation. Naidu directed the Kurnool Chief Engineer, Vijayawada Central Designs Commissioner, and national dam gate expert Kanna Naidu to provide a detailed report. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for continuous updates on the situation.

Residents of Kautalam, Kosigi, Mantralayam, and Nandavaram mandals have been advised to stay alert. Minister Ramanaidu has also warned officials at the Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar, and Pulichintala projects to remain vigilant.
