New Delhi: Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, and five other prominent Congress officials were absent from the party's Working Committee meeting on Sunday.

AK Antony, the former defence minister, did not attend the meeting since he tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday. A Chella Kumar, former Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Tariq Hameed Karra, and G Sanjeeva Reddy were among the other leaders who did not attend the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting. The CWC is holding a meeting to address the party's dismal setback in Assembly elections in five states.

Dr. Singh, a member of the Rajya Sabha, is an active public figure. He was named the head of an internal 11-member committee in April 2020 to define the Congress party's position on critical national problems, particularly in the wake of party president Sonia Gandhi's coronavirus pandemic.

The results of five assembly elections came as a shock to the Congress, which had hoped to do well in order to boost its prospects in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and fight off a challenge from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Trinamool Congress to replace it as the country's anti-BJP fulcrum.
