Hyderabad: Several people, most of them children, were injured and treated for cornea and conjunctiva problems while bursting crackers on the occasion of Diwali at the city's eye hospital. Reportedly, several private hospitals also operated on those injured after being hit by firecrackers. Even during Diwali 2020, which was low-key due to the second wave of Covid, 80-90 people were injured.

The government should look into the issue, meanwhile, BJP MLA Raja Singh urged the state government and police to take measures to address the issue. He said that many such incidents are due to fake crackers. Alleging that the essential raw materials used in many cases and the guidelines laid down for making firecrackers are not being followed, he urged the government to ensure that the manufacturers strictly follow all the guidelines.

Best known as the festival of lights, Diwali has over the decades turned into a festival of firecrackers, or at least some claim that firecrackers are an integral part of Diwali celebrations, and the two are essentially inseparable. Huh. According to the late historian PK Gode, "The use of fireworks in the celebration of Diwali, which is now very common in India, may have come into existence after about 1400 AD when gunpowder began to be used in Indian warfare.
