The Greater Chennai Corporation  is carrying out cleaning and other works at the beaches across the city as the  State Government has allowed Marina Beach and other beaches in the city to opened to open for the public from Monday. The civic body workers were seen sieving the beach sands and removing garbage using beach cleaning tractors at Marina Beach on Saturday.

The beaches are now barricaded to prevent unauthorised entry of visitors, the civic body would also remove the barricades from beaches before Monday morning, the reopening. The vendors who put their shop on the beach have welcomed the move to open the Marina as they were lying shut for several months severely affecting their livelihood. Chennai Corporation closed Marina Beach, Elliot’s Beach, and other beaches in the city limits on March 21 following the COVID-19 induced lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The State government announced the reopening of beaches as a part of COVID-19 lockdown relaxation in the month of December. Even though the civic body will make any arrangement for regulating the crowds at the beach, the officials will follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) framed by the government. Also, civic body informs that penalties will be imposed on visitors who fail to adhere to the mask compliance and vendors violating social distancing norms. At present, the civic body collects a fine of Rs 200 from those who come from outside without wearing masks and seals shops if they violate social distancing norms.
