The Indian capital market benchmarks ended on a subdued note on Thursday, September 9,  with the Sensex ending 55 points higher at 58,305 and Nifty 50 index rose 16 points to close at 17,369.25. Bharti Airtel, Nestle India, Tata Steel and ITC boosted the indices.

The market remained choppy all through the session amid weak global cues ahead of the European Central Bank meet outcome due later today. Media, IT and FMCG shares advanced while banks shares declined.

Thirteen of 19 sector gauges compiled by the Bombay Stock Exchange ended higher led by the S&P BSE Telecom index's over 2 percent gain. Power, Metal, Utilities, FMC, IT and Basic Material indices also rose between 0.6-1.2 percent. On the other hand, Banking, Financial Services, Consumer Durables and Realty indices ended lower.

Airtel, Nestle India, TCS, and ITC contributed the most to gains. Meanwhile, private banks, Reliance, and Infosys were among the top drags. In sectoral space, Nifty Realty followed by Financial Services, Pharma and Bank were the top losers.. Other sectoral gainers were Metal, FMCG, IT and PSU Bank.

Asian shares dropped Thursday in line with a cautious global mood as investors worried about the combination of slowing global growth and the potential tapering of central bank stimulus.
