India’s leading car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, is all set to showcase its highly-expected electric SUV, the e Vitara, in India. The debut is scheduled for Friday, January 17 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. This all-electric SUV first grabbed attention during its global unveiling in Milan, Italy, back in 2024. The e Vitara is inspired by Maruti’s eVX concept, which was introduced at the Auto Expo 2023.

The e Vitara marks a milestone for Maruti Suzuki as its first fully electric vehicle designed from scratch to support an electric drivetrain. It is expected to hit Indian showrooms by March 2025. Once launched, the e Vitara will compete with popular electric SUVs like the Mahindra BE 6, Tata Curvv EV, MG Windsor EV, and Hyundai Creta EV, the latter slated for a January 2025 launch.

Design: Staying True to Its Concept Roots

When Maruti Suzuki unveiled the eVX concept in early 2023, the company hinted that the production model would closely resemble the prototype. True to their word, the e Vitara retains much of the eVX’s design DNA, featuring a bold and futuristic aesthetic. While the production model appears slightly more refined with softer edges, it maintains the sleek silhouette and sharp design cues of the original concept.

Premium Interiors and Advanced Features

The e Vitara’s interior exudes sophistication with a dual-tone black and tan color scheme. The lower portion of the cabin is finished in black, complemented by soft-touch tan upholstery for a premium feel. A standout feature is the free-standing single-piece panel, which integrates the touchscreen infotainment system and digital instrument cluster.

The central console is equipped with physical buttons for quick access, and other highlights include a flat-bottom steering wheel, a rotary gear selector, an electronic parking brake, a 360-degree camera, and connected car technology. Additional details about the vehicle’s tech features will be revealed during its unveiling.

Building a Nationwide EV Charging Network

Maruti Suzuki is also working on creating a robust EV charging infrastructure across India. The company plans to provide home charging solutions while also establishing a widespread network of fast-charging stations at its dealerships and service centers to support EV adoption.

Shared Platform and Battery Options

The e Vitara has been co-developed with Toyota, utilizing a newly designed skateboard platform. This platform features a flat floor to accommodate the battery pack. Toyota is expected to release its version of this EV under the Urban Cruiser HyRyder Electric Vehicle name.

While Maruti Suzuki has yet to confirm the specifications for the Indian variant, the global model suggests two battery pack options. The base model will likely include a 49 kWh battery, while the higher trims are expected to feature a larger 61 kWh battery, offering an extended range and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration.
