These works are going to be done to make petrol cars more fuel efficient

Maruti Suzuki has decided to stay away from the diesel vehicle segment and instead focused on making its petrol vehicles more fuel-efficient. The company's new launch 2021 with a new K10-C engine Celerio mid-hatchback claims to be the country's most fuel-efficient petrol car and is getting it with a mileage of 26.68 kmpl.

The company's chief technical officer C V Raman said the country's largest carmaker believes that sales of diesel vehicles will come down further after the introduction of the next phase of emission norms in 2023. He said there has been a gradual change in the direction of petrol cars in the last few years. "Going forward, we will not participate in the diesel sector''. The upcoming strict emission norms have been cited as the primary reason for avoiding diesel-powered cars. "In 2023, there will be a new phase of emission norms which is likely to increase costs. So, we believe that the diesel percentage may come down further. Raman said Maruti has no intention of participating in the diesel sector. ''

As per industry estimates, the share of diesel vehicles in the country is currently less than 17 per cent of the total passenger vehicle (PV) sales. This is a sharp decline from the period 2013-14 when diesel used to be 60 per cent of the total sales of cars. Since the bs 6 emission norms came into force from April 1, 2020, many vehicle manufacturers like Maruti abandoned diesel trims of their respective portfolios.

In its portfolio, Maruti BS offers 6-compliant 1 litre, 1.2 litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines, and also offers CNG trim in its seven models. The company aims to further improve its internal combustion engine technology in terms of fuel efficiency.
