Mary Kom was born on 24 November 1982. She is an Indian amateur boxer, politician and member of parliament, and member of the Rajya Sabha. She is the only female boxer to become a World Amateur Boxing Champion for a six-time record, having won medals in each of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer to win eight World Championships, the only woman to qualify at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Boxer Mary Kom is scheduled to compete in the flyweight (51 kg) category and win a bronze medal. She was also ranked as the world's No. 1 female light-flyweight by the International Boxing Association (Amateur) (AIBA). She became the first Indian female boxer to win a gold medal at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea in 2014 and is the first Indian female boxer to win a gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She is also the only boxer to become the Asian Amateur Boxing Champion for a six-time record.

On 25 April 2016, the President of India nominated KOM as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. In March 2017, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India appointed Mary Kom as National Supervisor for Boxing along with Akhil Kumar.

After her sixth world title in 2018, the Government of Manipur has honored her with the title of "Meethoi Leima", which was translated as a great or extraordinary woman at a function held in Imphal on 11 December 2018. At the ceremony, the then Chief Minister Manipur also announced that the road leading to the National Sports Village in Imphal West district, where Kom currently resides, would be named as MC Mary Kom Road. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honor, in 2020.
