Defending Formula One champion Max Verstappen and Jamaica's Olympic Farrata champion Ileen Thompson Herah have won the top honours of the 2022 Laureus World Sports Awards here. The Laureus World Sports Academy has named Verstappen as the World Men's Player of the Year and Elaine Thompson as the World Women's Player of the Year on Sunday night from the middle of the top players.
The award is being given on the basis of performance in the sports world in 2021. Italy's team, which won the European Championship, has been adjudged the best Laures team of the year for the second time. Teenage tennis player Emma Radukanu was voted the 'Laureus Breakthrough of the Year' for winning the US Open title at the age of 18.
India's star javelin thrower and defending Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra was also nominated in this category. The 'Comeback of the Year' award has gone to Sky Brown while the best player of the year award has been given to Marcel Haug in the divyang category. Tom Brady has also been rewarded for his lifetime achievements. The best 'Action' Player of the Year award went to Bethany Shriver while Valentino Rossi has been awarded the 'Sporting Icon' award.
