Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and former Chief Minister Mayawati has taken a dig at Akhilesh Yadav through a tweet about the humiliating defeat of the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the by-election to Gola Gokarnanath seat in Uttar Pradesh. Mayawati has said that the BSP was not in the fray in the Gola by-election. Now, what excuse will the SP make for its defeat?

It is noteworthy that since the last assembly elections in UP, there has been a competition between the BSP and SP to give a message to their voters. In this, the SP is accusing the BSP of colluding with the BJP to deliberately field candidates who harm the SP candidate and benefit the BJP. At the same time, the BSP says that due to Muslims unilaterally voting in favour of SP, Hindu votes were polarised in the UP elections. BSP says "This is the reason why the BJP was able to form a majority government again and the BSP suffered the worst defeat ever (winning just one seat).''

Political pundits say that Mayawati's effort is to convince voters, especially Muslim voters, that the BSP is the only party in UP that can defeat the BJP, so there is no use in voting for the SP. At the same time, the SP is constantly accusing the BSP of colluding with the BJP. Akhilesh Yadav had blamed the BSP for the defeat even after the SP's defeat in the Azamgarh Lok Sabha by-election in June this year. In fact, the BSP had fielded Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali from the seat. Akhilesh Yadav had alleged that the BSP deliberately fields candidates that divide the SP's votes and benefit the BJP.  

But, now the BSP has not fielded any candidate in the Gola Gokarnanath's seat and the Congress also did not contest from here. In such a situation, the fight was between BJP and SP, yet SP lost. Mayawati has taunted Akhilesh on this defeat of SP and asked what excuse he will make now. Mayawati wrote in a tweet, ''The Gokarnath assembly by-election of UP's Kheri is more in discussion for the defeat of the SP by 34,298 votes than the victory of the BJP. When BSP mostly does not contest by-elections and was not in the fray here too, what new excuse will SP make for its defeat?''

In another tweet, Mayawati said, "Now in the by-elections to Mainpuri Lok Sabha and Rampur Assembly next month, like Azamgarh, the challenge before the SP is to save these old seats. It remains to be seen whether the SP will be able to win these seats again by defeating the BJP or they will not be to defeat the BJP, will be proved again.''
