New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the Election Commission seeking their response on the cancellation of Samajwadi Party (SP) strongman Azam Khan's assembly membership. Let me tell you that Azam Khan was sentenced to 3 years in jail by a local court in the case of hate speech in the past. After this, Azam's membership of the assembly was cancelled.

Now Azam Khan has challenged the disqualification of his MLAship in the Supreme Court. The matter was heard in the court today i.e. on Monday. Meanwhile, the apex court has sent notices to the UP Assembly Secretary and the Election Commission asking the reason for the cancellation of the membership of the Assembly. The matter will now come up for a hearing on Wednesday (November 9).

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Azam Khan made very objectionable and provocative comments while giving an election speech in Rampur's Milak Assembly. After which BJP leader Akash Saxena complained about it. In the same case, the MP-MLA court of Rampur convicted Azam Khan on October 27 and sentenced him to three years in jail. After this, Azam Khan's MLAship was abolished.
