On Friday, August 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a discussion with Muhammad Yunus, the interim head of the Bangladesh government and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. During their conversation, Modi extended India's full support for restoring peace in Bangladesh.

In a post on X, Modi announced that Yunus had given assurances regarding the protection and safety of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. This development came in the wake of significant unrest following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina's government. Hasina left Bangladesh and sought refuge in India on August 5 amid widespread protests over a contentious job quota system. These events had reportedly led to increased violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Modi shared, "Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, @ChiefAdviserGoB. We exchanged views on the current situation. I reiterated India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh. Yunus assured the protection, safety, and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh."
