Mercedes-Benz said on Friday that it sold around 2.05 million vehicles last year, ceding the premium automaker position for the first time to rival BMW, which delivered a record-breaking 2.2 million vehicles in 2021.
Mercedes-Benz said that sales of its electric vehicles increased by 90%, reaching 99,301 EVs.Its van sector sold 3,34,210 units, representing a 2.5 percent increase over the previous year. The most significant drop in Mercedes-Benz passenger car sales occurred in Europe. It accounted for around 11.2 percent, while the firm suffered a 2% drop in the world's largest vehicle market. In the United States, though, the premium automaker only saw a 0.4 percent increase. Mercedes-Benz will release all of its yearly sales data next week.
Even as the car sector comes to grips with an ongoing semiconductor shortage and pandemic, BMW revealed this week that it has sold over 2.2 million vehicles, surpassing its 2019 sales. According to a company spokesperson, the Bavarian carmaker sold more over 2.2 million automobiles for the first time ever last year. Pieter Nota, the company's sales head, announced record sales for the company's other brands, MINI and Rolls-Royce. According to Nota, these businesses saw strong sales increase last year as well. "We expect profitable growth to continue beyond 2022," says the company "Nota chimed in.
Last year, BMW Group India had its fastest growth in a decade, delivering 8,876 automobiles, including BMW and MINI models, as well as 5,191 motorbikes. Last year, the BMW brand sold 8,236 cars in the country, while the MINI brand sold 640.
