Berlin: Michael Kretschmer, the state premier of Saxony, has argued that Germany should fix the Nord Stream gas pipelines while it is still possible. The politician suggested that the pipelines, which were destroyed last September, might be required once more in the event that trade relations between Germany and Russia are normalised under new management in Moscow.

Keep your options open when it comes to energy policy, Kretschmer said in an interview with the German magazine Focus that was published on Sunday.

The official went on to say that when Putin passes away, "the pipeline could also be an opportunity for a successor to restore economic relations with us." He estimated that this could happen in about five years.

The conduits should be repaired as soon as possible because they will soon be beyond repair, according to the state leader of Saxony.

Additionally, Kretschmer insisted that Germany would gain from having as many operational pipelines as possible, not the least of which is the ability to reduce CO2 emissions. Although the politician claims that when considering its transportation, liquified natural gas (LNG) is just as expensive and polluting as domestic brown coal, Germany is now dependent on it. Kretschmer noted that the nation's power consumption is anticipated to rise.

Given Warsaw's longstanding opposition to the project, Kretschmer was asked about a potential Polish backlash to any restoration of Nord Stream. He responded that the two EU members should have a reasoned discussion about the matter. But he insisted that Germany must act in its own interests because it is a sovereign state.

Kretschmer asserted that Germany has focused "too much" on arming Kiev in the Ukraine conflict rather than coming up with a plan for peace. He asserted that a ceasefire and peace negotiations are urgently required because the situation in Ukraine is "worse and worse" every day.

The state premier of Saxony claimed that Germany is "now directly involved in this conflict" as a result of its military assistance to Ukraine.

In order to be more credible and active as a mediator and diplomatic actor, I felt that this is exactly what we should not have done, said Kretschmer, claiming that "nearly 50%" of people in eastern Germany concur with him.
